The Four Schools
So, what’s up with the whole four schools thing?
If you’re thinking of applying to Penn, you should know you don't technically apply to Penn, you apply to one of our four undergraduate schools. (Or one of our coordinated dual-degree programs). The school you choose will become your home base and will be the school that grants your degree, but is by no means a limit on what you can study!
Our campus in the heart of Philly contains all four of our undergraduate schools (and SO much more) all within walking distance of each other. Each college has its own unique focus and opportunities, but we’re really big on interdisciplinarity and not limiting yourself to just one thing here. This means that students can take classes in any of our four schools, regardless of which one they apply to.
Application Advice
To set yourself up for success in the admissions process, you should apply to the school that matches both your academic interests and your academic preparation to date. For example, you’ll notice that Penn Engineering is looking for exposure to calculus and physics because these are subjects necessary for successful completion of their degrees. Penn Nursing is seeking students with a commitment to patient care and exposure to chemistry in high school. Make sure to research the various academic programs offered here and each program’s suggested preparation.
HOT TIP: While all Penn students have access to courses across the university, it is important to consider where you want to focus your undergraduate studies and choose your academic program accordingly. When asked to write about your academic interests in our application essays, focus on the specific undergraduate school you have selected. This doesn’t mean you have to have narrow academic interests! You can share the various ways you hope to get involved at Penn in addition to explaining why you feel a particular school will be the best “home base” for you.
We also offer Coordinated Dual-Degree, Accelerated, and Specialized programs!
Don't want to limit yourself to just one school? Don't worry — Penn offers programs that allow you to obtain bachelor’s degrees with coursework from at least two different schools within the University!
